Ikariam
Ancient Greek StrategyIkariam, developed by Gameforge AG (the same publisher behind OGame), transports you to the sun-drenched islands of the ancient Mediterranean. Released in 2008, it's accumulated over 51 million registered players across 38 languages, making it one of the most internationally accessible browser strategy games ever created. You begin with a small settlement on a shared island and must grow it into a thriving city-state through resource gathering, construction, research, and diplomacy.
What sets Ikariam apart is its island-based resource system. Each island has a unique luxury resource (wine, marble, crystal glass, or sulfur) in addition to universal wood. Players on the same island share access to the resource deposit and must coordinate (or compete) for extraction. This naturally encourages trading between players on different islands, as no single player can be self-sufficient. The marketplace enables direct player-to-player trading, creating a genuine player-driven economy.
Research & Military
The research system is divided into four branches — Seafaring, Economy, Science, and Military — allowing players to specialize or develop broadly. Military gameplay includes both land armies and naval fleets, with players able to siege enemy towns, blockade ports, and conduct raids. Cultural treaties and trade agreements add diplomatic depth beyond simple alliances. Version 14.0.0 (May 2025) added the Chronos' Forge building to reduce construction times and increased maximum levels for island resources and buildings.
Why It's Great
Ikariam's charm lies in its relaxed pace and cooperative island dynamics. The shared island system creates natural communities where players must cooperate on resource gathering even if they're rivals otherwise. The Mediterranean setting is gorgeous and distinctive, and the game's forgiving pace means casual players can thrive alongside hardcore strategists. Building and research happen in real time while you're away, making it ideal for players who want strategic depth without constant attention. Over 17 years after launch, Ikariam remains a compelling choice.
